WP1: Market analysis and state-of-the-art studies

The mine tailings activities are not evenly distributed in the world. Those are related to where the mineral ores are found economic to explore. To limit the scope and identify the main focus areas for this project, WP1 will kick-off the project with the following activities:

• Make an overview of the type and amount of tailing and waste rock materials produced. This relates for instance to the amount of wastes produced for the different types of minerals and metals e.g. hard rock mining (Cu, Zn, Pb, Au etc), bauxite and coal.
   
• Perform a market analysis for tailing operations of interest for NGI. What is the potential in Norway, Northern Europe and the rest of the world? Where are the main markets, and who are the main actors? What are the perspectives in the coming years, especially related to the need for rare metals required for the "green" revolution?
   
• Make an overview of best practice in TSF management and state-of-the-art methods that can be applied to improve TSF design.
