Tsunami map for Lake Vangsmjøse

Skutshorn is an extensive, unstable mountain range located 600 meters above Lake Vangsmjøse (466 m above sea level) in Vang municipality in Norway. Parts of the mountain range of up to ten million cubic meters move by up to three centimeters a year. A major landslide from Skutshorn could cause a tsunami that could hit buildings along Lake Vangsmjøse, including the municipal center in Vang.

Commissioned by NVE, NGI has created a hazard map for the reach of a tsunami in Lake Vangsmjøse after a potential landslide from Skutshorn. Landslide volume (9,500,000 m3) and probabilities of the landslide breaking loose have been calculated by the Geological Survey of Norway. NGI has modeled the upwash reach of the tidal waves for the entire Lake Vangsmjøse.

Hazard zones for tidal waves have been produced with upwash limits for high damage potential for various recurrence periods and low damage potential with very long recurrence periods.

The largest areas that can be flooded are the flatter areas at Grindaheim (from the gas station in the west and past Vang primary and secondary school in the east) and the west in Lake Vangsmjøse by Øye. At Grindaheim, there are, among other things, the town hall and the building with, among other things, a doctor's office within all the danger zones, while Vang church is located on a small hill outside all the danger zones. At Øye, most of the buildings on the south side of Lundsfjorden/Kvamsfjorden, including Øye stave church, are within the danger zones. Some buildings and commercial property are outside the danger zones on the north side.

Due to the shape of the terrain and the characteristics of incoming waves, there are large variations in the upwash heights throughout this area. The E16 is more or less affected by all the danger zones contiguous from Vang primary and secondary school to the area where the old road towards Øye takes off from the E16.
