WP 3 - In situ environmental monitoring in water

By placing the sampler in water, sediment or soil, pollutants are taken up and concentrations can be deduced at very low trace concentrations (down to 1 picogram per m3 for dioxins) such as encountered at open sea. Currently, passive samplers are well established for several of the "classic" environmental contaminants such as PCB, PAH and dioxins.

However, many more chemicals have a potential for negative environmental impact, and passive samplers for oil components need to be developed. In order to enable monitoring of the relevant chemicals causing the risk, development of passive samplers for new contaminants is needed.

Contaminants that are important to monitor based on their potential risk such a their degree of bioaccumulation, or their abundant use will be identified and methods investigated and developed for these compounds
