Comprehensive Laboratory Assignment for Southern North Sea II
The Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) is conducting extensive laboratory work for Southern North Sea II, Norway’s first large-scale offshore wind farm. The assignment, carried out on behalf of the developer Ventyr, is valued at nearly 1.6 million euros.

The work involves testing samples from ten boreholes with continuous sampling down to 45 metres below the seabed. The samples are retrieved using specialized vessels and are supplemented by data from cone penetration tests (CPT) and seismic surveys.
From seabed to advanced analysis
In NGI’s laboratories, the material will be analysed for strength, deformation, friction, and cyclic loading properties.
"We are testing, among other things, how much sand and clay can withstand before failure, and how the soil is affected by repeated loading from waves and wind. Our results go directly to the engineers who calculate the foundations. Without such data, it is impossible to design safely", explains Project Manager Stein Strandvik.
A milestone for norwegian offshore wind
Southern North Sea II is located in the southern part of the North Sea, near the border with Denmark. The area is relatively shallow, with depths between 50 and 70 metres. This allows for bottom-fixed installations rather than more expensive floating structures.
Strandvik emphasises that the project marks a turning point for the industry.
"Southern North Sea II represents a unique opportunity to establish a Norwegian offshore wind industry on solid ground," says Strandvik.
The assignment will occupy a substantial part of NGI’s laboratory capacity over the next two years and provides NGI with an important foothold in a market expected to grow significantly in the years ahead.
