Welcome to GEOS 2026 — where science meets action
Climate change is reshaping the landscape of natural hazards. Landslides, floods, debris flows, and other geohazards are becoming more frequent, more intense, and more unpredictable — threatening lives, communities, and infrastructure across the globe. Meeting this challenge demands a new kind of collaboration: one that bridges engineering precision, scientific rigor, and societal awareness.
The GEOS Symposium was born from exactly that conviction.
Organized by the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) and funded by the Research Council of Norway, GEOS 2026 brings together the international research communities behind three landmark collaborative projects — GEOMME, NATRISK, and IP4EWS — spanning partnerships across Norway, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, India, and Canada. Together, these projects represent the cutting edge of research on climate-induced geohazards, early warning systems, risk management, and community resilience.
GEOS 2026 marks the closing milestone of these projects — a moment to reflect on what has been achieved, share findings with the wider scientific community, and chart the path forward. But it is also something more: the first edition of a recurring symposium designed to endure as a lasting platform for the field.
Oslo, August 31 – September 2, 2026
The symposium will be hosted at Deichman Library — Oslo's iconic main public library, a landmark of open knowledge and contemporary architecture nestled in the heart of the city's vibrant Bjørvika waterfront district. It is a fitting venue for a symposium that believes science must be accessible, connected to society, and open to the world.
What to expect at GEOS 2026
The three-day programme is designed to foster both knowledge exchange and genuine dialogue. Highlights include keynote lectures from world-leading experts, thematic sessions covering the full spectrum of climate-driven geohazard research, and roundtables where engineers, scientists, and policymakers engage on the societal dimensions of risk and resilience.
A special feature of GEOS 2026 is the Apex Lecture — a distinguished named lecture celebrating scientists at the peak of their careers (40 to 50 years old), whose work is actively shaping the future of the field.
Participants will also engage hands-on through an ideation workshop designed to spark new collaborations, and a poster session showcasing the latest research from project partners and students across four continents.
A symposium with a legacy
GEOS is conceived not as a one-time event, but as a growing tradition — a recurrent forum that will evolve with each edition, open to new hosting institutions and communities who share the mission of building a safer, more resilient world in the face of a changing climate.
We look forward to welcoming you to Oslo.
The next GEOS will be held in 2028.
GEOS 2026 is organised by NGI – Norwegian Geotechnical Institute, with support from the Research Council of Norway.
