Digital Norway is a membership organisation with over 100 companies from various industries. The organisation provides an independent arena where members share experiences, build competence, and collaborate on digital development across sectors.

NGI's CEO Lars Andresen points to the importance of such a meeting place.

"We believe in value creation through collaboration and sharing, and independent arenas that exist for the best of Norway. We fully support Digital Norway's mission."

Even though Digital Norway's members and owners come from very different domains, they face many of the same challenges, Andresen believes:

"How do we build digital competence broadly across our organisation? How should we approach security? These are solutions we can work out together," he says.

Research and digitalisation belong together

Andersen also highlights Digital Norway's clear role in mobilizing more resources for research.

"Looking ahead, research and digitalisation are completely inseparable. Society as a whole, and business in particular, must invest more in research and development if Norway is to achieve productivity, competitiveness, value creation, and a green transition, while maintaining a safe society. All of this requires enormous effort. That's why Digital Norway's focus areas also align very well with what we are concerned with," he says.

NGI has worked systematically on digitalisation for over ten years. As early as 2015, the institute established a specialist group for machine learning, marking the beginning of its new digital initiative. The following year, digitalisation and new technologies became part of NGI's primary strategy, and today the institute has its own development department, NGI Digital, which works at the intersection of geoscience expertise and modern software development.

Stability in uncertain times

Andresen points out that questions about security, control, and preparedness have gained increasing prominence, both in public debate and internally at NGI.

"It's about how we look after ourselves in terms of vulnerabilities, control of the value chain, and what role we play in Norway's total defence. Here, Digital Norway does important work in raising this issue."

He emphasises that NGI's knowledge of ground conditions, landslides, flooding, offshore wind, and critical infrastructure is part of the preparedness chain in Norway.

"In other words, what the geosciences deal with is absolutely crucial for our society to function, also in a crisis."

Forward-leaning professional community

Liv Dingsør, CEO of Digital Norway, is pleased to welcome NGI into the community.

"NGI is a professional community that really demonstrates the value data can have when used wisely. They make complex ground conditions understandable and highlight how digital processes can enhance security, planning, and preparedness. It is incredibly inspiring to have such a substantial and forward-leaning organisation on the team," she says.

She points out that NGI's social mission aligns with Digital Norway's most important focus areas, including digital competence and increased research efforts in business, as well as digital preparedness in total defence.

"NGI's work to understand and secure the ground beneath us is not just about buildings and infrastructure, but about society's ability to stand firm when it matters most. When they are also so clear about the value of collaboration and sharing, they hit the mark on what we believe is needed to succeed with the digitalisation of Norway," says Dingsør.
