Apex Lecture

A special feature of GEOS 2026 is the Apex Lecture — a distinguished named lecture celebrating scientists at the peak of their careers (40 to 50 years old), whose work is actively shaping the future of the field. 

Requirements

Applicants for the GEOS 2026 Apex Lecture must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an established mid-career scientist or practitioner (typically 40–50 years old at the time of the symposium).
  • Demonstrate significant and ongoing contributions to risk assessment for climate-driven hazards, including research, applied projects, or policy-relevant work.
  • Show evidence of international engagement and impact (e.g. leadership in projects, guidelines, operational frameworks, or major case studies).
  • Be able to deliver the Apex Lecture in person during GEOS Symposium 2026 in Oslo.
  • Submissions may be self-nominated or nominated by peers or institutions. 

Procedure

To apply or nominate a candidate for the Apex Lecture, please submit the following by MAY 15, 23:59 CEST as a single PDF to the email address geos@ngi.no:

Brief CV (max. 2 pages)

  • Candidate information (Full name, Current affiliation and position, Contact email)
  • Highlighting key publications, projects, leadership roles, and practical impact 

Short motivation statement (max. 500 words)

  • Description of the candidate’s contribution and relevance of their work to climate-driven geohazards and societal impact

Proposed lecture abstract (max. 300 words)

  • Title and short summary of the planned Apex Lecture

Supporting letter (max. 1 page)

  • From a collaborator, institution, or stakeholder

All submissions will be reviewed by the GEOS 2026 Scientific Committee. Selection will be based on scientific excellence, real-world impact, leadership in practice, and relevance to the symposium theme.
