Symposium

Benchmarking is of significant importance in geotechnical engineering, both for testing and verifying innovative soil investigation methods and foundation solutions. NGI and its partners, NTNU, SINTEF, UNIS and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA), are pleased to welcome you all to the 1st International GeoTest Site Symposium (ISGTS) in Oslo.

The 1st ISGTS aims to:

  • Present detailed characterization of a wide range of natural soils used for benchmarking in geotechnical engineering, and
  • Promote an increase use of the benchmark sites as a research tool, as training and teaching facilities and as ground for development of new soil models, testing of new investigation methods and further advance the state-of-the-art.

As of now we have received over 20 abstracts from all over the world and with topics related to a range of natural soil deposits (clay, silt, sand, permafrost and peat). The event will be of the highest quality and will provide a reference for future characterization and large scale testing of natural soils.

Tentative program

11th June:

  • Welcome reception at NGI (Sognsveien 72) from 18:00-20:00

12th June:

  • Characterization and Engineering Properties of Natural Soils used as GeoTest sites
  • Discussion panel

13th June:

  • Examples of testing for verification of foundation solutions (large-scale testing)
  • Use of database for modelling and correlation purposes
  • Discussion panel
  • Symposium dinner (18:00-22:00)

14th June:

  • Field trip to the benchmark testing facilities at Onsøy (soft clay) and Halden (silt)
  • Lunch in the old town of Fredrikstad

Publication venue and content of papers

Papers from the ISGTS symposium will be published in a special issue of AIMS Geosciences (http://www.aimspress.com/newsinfo/949.html). Authors are now required to prepare a full-length paper (including all text, tables, figures and references). Only authors accompanied by full papers will be assigned an oral presentation slot at the symposium. Papers describing test sites and meant for the fist day must comply in structure and layout with given instructions:

  • Site geology and location, distribution, local and global importance
  • Engineering geology, including source of material, depositional environment, post-depositional processes and stress history
  • Composition, mineralogy and fabric
  • State and index properties
  • Engineering properties (strength, stiffness, hydraulic conductivity, etc.)
  • Comments on quality/reliability of data, with reference to methods of sampling, laboratory testing and standard in situ testing methods.
  • Engineering problems including a summary of typical problems and hazards and with references to case histories

Other papers dealing with i) Examples of large-scale testing at a given benchmark site, ii) Testing and verification of in situ tools for soil characterization at benchmark test sites, iii) Use of soil parameter database for modelling and/or correlation purposes, may differ in structure.

Instructions for authors:
