NGI has a world-leading laboratory and holds not only equipment for standard characterization, but also research facilities for specialized rock physics and geophysical tests including various setups;

  • Axial and radial velocity and resistivity for measurements for anisotropy and sequential resistivity measurements.
  • Triaxial testing in CT scanner for visualisation of deformation and flow with simultaneous rock physics testing (velocity and resistivity).
  • Fluid properties under stress and temperature (velocity and resistivity).
  • Heat cabinet for testing of fluid and supercritical CO2 testing for temperatures up to 300oC.

Acoustic emission setup (M<-4, r < 1 cm, f>10 kHz). Compute source mechanisms based on recorded waveforms and relate induced seismicity to stress path, rock deformation and failure.

Six triaxial cells equipped with setup for axial and radial measurements of velocity, resistivity, acoustic emission and specially designed resistivity measurement core sleeve with copper electrode rings embedded for sequential resistivity measurements.

NGI set-up are specially designed for the combination of geomechanical and geophysical measurements and large geophysical datasets can be achieved in a cost effective way during geomechanical test programs. Also this special design give higher flexibility towards choice of stress and temperature path or flooding conditions (i.e. representative for a dynamically changing reservoir or compacting sediments) compared to traditional geophysical set-ups.

The rock physics services also include

  • Streamlined measurements, processing, analysis and reporting of large  number of  P- and S -wave velocities and resistivity data
  • Advanced computing methods for design, imaging, analysis and back calculation of experiments
  • Rock physics analysis of test data and integration with well-logs and seismic/EM data for application to Field

Research activities within Rock Physics

NGI has a close cooperation with University of Oslo for several research projects and a long history of PhD and master students working in the NGI laboratory. Ongoing research topics at NGI are;

  • Rock physics relationships of sediments and fluids with different fluid phases (i.e for CO2 flow at different temperatures)
  • Dynamic vs. static relationships and stress dependency
  • Velocity and resistivity anisotropy as a function of lithology and mineralogy in close cooperation in projects with UiO research Group.
