Input data to numerical analysis are derived from available field data (cores, logs and seismic data), established geomechanical and rock physics relationships and fault zone models. Uncertainties in models are addressed using sensitivity studies.

NGI has a world-leading laboratory with equipment for standard rock characterization as well as research facilities with specialized testing of fault mechanism and properties:

  • Triaxial testing for basic characterization of faults and host rocks
  • Ring Shear and Shear Box testing device for fault sealing and fracture characterization
  • Triaxial tests inside CT scanner for visualisation of deformation and flow properties
  • Microscopic characterization using thin section of tested samples.
