Contaminated sediments poses a problem both by the fact that pollutants are transferred to the food chain and by dredging and other activity in sediments can lead to increased proliferation and exposure to the pollution in the sediments.
Since the 90 's NGI has worked with the development of methods for sampling, monitoring, risk assessment and remediation measures in polluted sediment on the sea bottom.
NGI has been pivotal in the development of the tools for risk assessment of contaminated sediments for the Norwegian Environment Agency. This tool is used in the prioritization of initiatives in different areas.
Monitoring of contaminants in sediments and in water
Through various research projects NGI has developed methods and different types of equipment for the monitoring of contaminants in water, sediment and of leaching from sediment to water. Examples of this are:
- Equilibrium passive samplers
for determination of low environmental relevant freely solved concentrations of organic contaminants
- Flux chambers
for determination of the leaching (flux) of organic pollutants from sediment to water
- Pore water probe
for determination of concentration gradients from pore water in the sediments to the water just above the sediment, with passive samplers.
We offer services in the field of field investigations, risk assessment, planning and monitoring of remediation measures in polluted sediments.
