Over the last years, NGI has developed methods for risk evaluation and management within selected areas of our activities. Examples are challenges related to natural hazards, offshore foundation engineering, and spoil heaps from mining. We are engaged in widespread research activities on risk assessment, aiming both to increase understanding within specific areas and to establish risk related methodologies for new challenges.

Research and development
NGI research in risk-related areas falls into four categories:
- EU-financed projects within natural disasters and environment
- Projects financed by the Research Council of Norway in the areas of natural disasters, land-based geomechanics and environment.
- Industry-financed projects within offshore foundation engineering.
- Self-financed research.
NGI initierte i 2014 et egenfinansiert strategisk prosjekt, GeoRisk Assessment and Management (GRAM) som har for mål å utvikle kunnskap og verktøy for risikovurderinger innen alle NGIs arbeidsområder.
In 2014, NGI initiated a self-financed strategic project, GeoRisk Assessment and Management (GRAM), with the aim of developing know-how, methods and tools for evaluating risk within all of NGI's areas of expertise. From 2002-2012, NGI led the International Centre for Geohazards (ICG), one of the first Norwegian Centres of Excellence (SFF). ICG carried out research into risk assessment and preventing or reducing damage caused by geohazards. NGI's partners in ICG were the University of Oslo (UiO), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim (NTNU), the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU), and NORSAR.
