The subgrade may be contaminated by both man-made environmental toxins or naturally occurring elements.

Is your property contaminated?

This is an important question, whether you need to plan a project where large volumes of excavation material needs to be addressed, or for investors to consider a purchase object, or as a private person who finds waste by digging in your garden. You have to deal with a myriad of laws, rules and regulations, and often have to conduct comprehensive investigations before the actual project can start. At the same time the regulations will assure that pollution havens astray and that health and the environment are protected.

In relation to industrial areas and urban areas there will usually be pollution in the ground. But also outside the cities there are areas contaminated from previous activity, often related to deposits and fills. Rock formations can also be a source of pollution, both by the contamination of heavy metals to the environment or radon gas which may pose a health risk in buildings.

Expertise

  • Sampling and classification of soil, sediment, water, sludge, rock and dust. NGI has held courses on sampling on behalf of the Norwegian Miljøringen ("Environmental ring") in 2013, 2014 and 2016.
  • Follow-up and control of large building and construction projects.
  • Risk assessment and measures.
  • Black shale and other acidiferous rocks. NGI has unique expertise in this field and has prepared several reports as the basis for supervisors for the Norwegian Environmental Directorate. NGI has XRF which can be used in special analyses.
  • Acute pollution and decontamination of oil pollution.

Research and development

  • Bio-char: Binding of pollution, soil improvement and carbon storage.
  • Stabilization of contaminants in polluted masses, such as debris from the shooting field.
  • PFC: Leaching and stabilization. NGI performs both the laboratory and field trials.
  • Acidiferous rocks.
