IMiRO - monitoring environmental risk

IMiRO; Innovative monitoring of environmental risk is a R&D project to enhance knowledge related to in situ and online monitoring in order to probe environmental risk. A result from this research is a new method for measuring hydrocarbons/PAH in water.

Online monitoring of PAH

A new method for measuring hydrocarbons/PAH in water has been developed within IMiRO. The method will be further developed and commercialized to a prototype PAH sensor for environmental monitoring and leakage detection.

Field tests of the prototype is planned in the Oslofjord and at an active offshore production site during 2017 and 2018. This new method will be vital to improve the possibilities for online monitoring of critical environmental parameters. See more information about the online monitoring of PAH.

Background and project description

IMiRO is a Strategic Research Project initiated and run by NGI, through NGI's annual basic research funding from The Norwegian Research Council.

In situ and online monitoring of environmentally relevant parameters is vital in order to identify the risk posed by the release of hazardous chemicals.  NGI has vast experience in the development of such monitoring systems and has previously developed a system that can monitor oil and gas leakages as well as passive sampling methods that can monitor the concentrations of organic pollutants in sediments and water.

Project goal

IMiRO's main goal is to facilitate the development of new concepts for in situ and online monitoring of environmental risk arising from environmental contaminants produced by the oil and gas industry and other industries that release such pollutants to offshore and coastal areas.

Over the coming years NGI will carry out research that will aim to enhance knowledge related to in situ and online monitoring in order to probe environmental risk. The project is called IMiRO; Innovative monitoring of environmental risk.

Work packages

IMiRO is divided into work packages, one for administration and dissemination, and three technical/scientific, as shown below.

  • WP 1 - Administration and Dissemination
  • WP 2  Online environmental monitoring (main focus will be on the oil and gas industry, but monitoring needs in the mining industry and other industries with potential contaminant releases to the coastal zone will also be addressed)
  • WP 3:  In situ environmental monitoring in water (passive samplers)
  • WP 4:  In situ environmental monitoring in seabed sediments
