  • Kvikkleireskred - erfaring og utfordringer

  • NGI, Oslo, 14.02.2017 - 14.02.2017

He is best known for his theory for the earth pressure on retaining walls. The Rankine Lecture is held in March each year. In even-numbered years, the lecturer is from the UK. In odd-numbered years, the lecturer is from outside the UK. Each lecture is usually published in Géotechnique.

  • Progressive Failure and Long Term Strength Degradation of Brittle Rocks - an ISRM Specialised Conference

Geological materials change their strength properties through time, which has significant implications for the stability of natural and artificial slopes, surface or subsurface excavations, and deep boreholes used for energy production. Time-dependent aspects of weakening and failure in natural systems are, however, difficult to study as internal damage is not visible to the naked eye, and the underlying processes can last from several seconds to many thousands of years. The conference goal is to improve the understanding and and ability to predict these processes.

Surface Challenges – underground solutions. Rapid population growth, increased urbanization and expected climate change will require major infrastructure investments, and wide use of underground solutions. Today more than half of the world’s population lives in cities. The surface urban space is limited available. This means that infrastructure must be planned underground. Accordingly, the use of the underground needs to be carefully and coherently engineered with sustainability in mind.

The energy mix is changing but the world will need every form of energy - both fossil and renewable - to meet its growing demands. Our ability to respond effectively to all the changes in our industry especially during this low oil and gas price cycle, determines whether we stay in a time of crises or move to that of opportunity. In order to survive and ultimately thrive again, we need to change and adapt our approaches and historical norms.
