The Quick clay landslide in Rissa, Sør-Trøndelag in 1978, is the largest in volume that has hit Norway after 1900.
Over 20 houses and farms were taken of the slide, and one person died. A total of 5-6 million cubic meters of mud slid out from an area of 33 hectare and the landslide left a fracture edge of 1.5 kilometers.

    • any type of vibration can set it off. before the mud flow, the clay pieces were holding up the solid structure of the sediments like a "house of cards" with a high level of water inside. a vibration can cause it to collapse making it fluid and the forward progression of the mudslide in turn will fruther liquefy any quick clay it impacts

    • Can someone please explain why it happened? I saw a video of this landslide a while ago but they didn't explain the causes in detail. Now I'm guessing, was it because the water content in the clay was already too much and kinda reduced the safety factor to 1.0 or something, and then someone excavated on the toe of the slope, removing the last bit of supporting forces, like the last straw that breaks the camel's back?
