In connection with NGI's co-operation project on "Dam Safety" with the Central Soil and Materials Research Station, Ministry of Water Resources, New Delhi, a workshop was held in Pune, India on "Risk Assessment for Dams".
Manikdoh Dam In Pune
NGI was represented by Kaare Hoeg, Tore Valstad and Rajinder Bhasin who participated in the workshop with presentations. The workshop in Pune was attended by 50 Senior Engineers from the state of Maharashtra in which Mumbai is the capital city. Maharashtra state has over 1800 dams of which approximately 1000 are between 15-150 m high. Many of the dams require up-gradation and rehabilitation.
During the visit, NGI personnel visited two masonry dams (Manikdoh and Warasgaon) which are respectively 53 m and 67 m high. These dams have a considerable amount of leakage and NGI was requested to carry out a safety review of the dams and provide advice on limiting the leakage in these dams.
NGI was well received by the Dam Safety authorities in India and the visit was covered in one of India's largest newspaper DNA in Pune.
