Generous grant to NGI's lab!

Date: 9/2/2011

Dr. John Schmertmann, Professor Emeritus at University of Florida, and a Post-Doctoral Fellow at NGI in the early 1960's, provided a most generous grant to NGI's laboratory for research on fundamental soil behavior. He visited NGI in the end of August to lay plans for the use of the grant.

In addition to his acclaimed profession in academics, Dr. John H. Schmertmann was successful with the establishment of several consulting firms in civil engineering. The reason for his wish to donate such a grant to the NGI is, as he says -because the NGI has been important for my career, and the ties I have kept with NGI throughout the years.

In addition he has great interest in laboratory investigations and research on soil behavior, and he is of the opinion that NGI is one of the best organizations to conduct such research.

See here for information about Dr. Schmertmann's ties with NGI.

The grant amounts to US$ 0,5 Million and a provisional annual contribution of US$ 50 000,- over an unspecified period.

John H. Schmertmann, now 82 years of age, during his visit in Norway and the NGI at the end of August, presented the "3rd DFI Osterberg Memorial Lecture", held in Toronto, Canada, August 10th 2011: "Testing and Remediation Observational Method (TROM) for the Design and Construction of Non-Redundant Pile Foundations". See announcement for the lecture, with link to information about Dr. Schmertmann and the Osterberg Memorial Lecture.
