Tunnels against landslides in Bhutan

Date: 1/17/2008

A study carried out by NGI and the Department of Geology and Mines (DGM) in Bhutan, concludes that it is possible to build new road tunnels to replace much of the road network exposed to slides and rockfall in Bhutan.

Since 2002, The Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) has supported a program for "Institutional Cooperation" between NGI and DGM.

The program can now be extended further. The focus is on safeguards against stone and rock slides along the main roads in mountainous Bhutan. NGI's project manager, Dr. Rajinder Bhasin, is very pleased and positive about the results of the cooperation project. For more details of the project, see the article in BhutanTimes.
