Natural Disaster Mitigation in the Caribbean

Together with the University of the West Indies (UWI), NGI and ICG have carried out a project on capacity building for natural disaster mitigation in the Caribbean. A project seminar 4-5 December in Barbados will mark the end of the project.

The project is funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and has the objective to reduce loss of lives, damage to properties and infrastructures, set-backs in economic development; and limiting the negative socio-economic effects caused by the natural hazards.
To achieve this the project has focus on:
- Capacity building for the build up of expertise at the University of West Indies (UWI) within geohazards, including landslides and tsunamis
- Cooperation with local administrative units and problem owners in the region
- Support on selected demonstration projects both on landslides and Tsunamis
The beneficiaries for this project have been
- People living in hot spot risk areas
- UWI institutions
- National organizations
- Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA)
Seminar in Barbados
The findings and conclusions of the project will be presented in a project seminar 4-5 December in Barbados, which also will mark the end of the project.
