ISO standard meeting on railway vibration specifications at NGI

Date: 6/4/2008

During the period of 2 to 3rd of June 2008, NGI has been the host of ISO-sponsored international group that deals with the specifications for the area of "Mechanical vibration - ground borne noise and vibration arising from the rail systems".

WG8 outside the NGI offices

The ISO technical committee 108, Sub committee 2, (known as ISO/TC108/SC2)  has a working group (WG8) of  vibrations international experts that most of them represent the biggest industrial nations. These experts in the technical committees are chosen from the corresponding standardizing institutions/authorities of their countries.
NGI employee, Christian Madshus, was chosen from the Norwegian Institution, Norsk standarisering, since his involvement in the area "Noise and vibration from the railway" is of great interest and significance for the Norwegian building industry.

WG8 has been working since 2003 and up to now they have produced several standards, one of them is ISO 14837-1 "General Guidelines". The agenda for the meetings at NGI was "Measurement of Dynamic Properties of Ground Materials". In that meeting Christian Madshus was chosen as the coordinator for the publication of the first version of technical rapport from WG8 group on this matter.

The remaining issues that will be later described in form of standards, or technical specifications, or technical reports within the area of  "Mechanical vibration - ground borne noise and vibration arising from the rail systems" are:

  • Prediction models
  • Measurement models
  • Evaluation criteria
  • Mitigations measures

The next meeting of this standardizing committee is in London in September 2009. In contradiction with the CEN-standards (EU) it is up to the standardizing institutions/authorities of each country itself for whether they will use the published ISO standards.
