Laboratory and model testing

Geotechnical and rock mechanics engineers require relevant data about ground conditions that describe the behaviour of soil and rocks.

The quality of the investigations of the strength and deformation properties of soil and rocks has made NGI's laboratory acknowledged worldwide.

NGI's state-of-the-art expertise

  • highly qualified laboratory personnel with extensive experience
  • ability and capacity to perform a large number of highly accurate tests within an agreed period of time
  • planning and conducting model tests in the laboratory and in the field as a basis for research and the development for design and calculation methods

Services related to laboratory and model testing

NGI's laboratory with workshops and model testing halls covers a full 2000 m2. The laboratory is a cornerstone of NGI's activities, and forms the starting point for many of NGI's fields of expertise.

In 2012 the Schmertmann Research Laboratory (SRL) was opened at NGI. This is a research laboratory equipped with a range of advanced geotechnical testing equipment, and SRL will focus on research on fundamental soil and clay behavior. The laboratory plans on attracting students and scientists from all over the world.

Triaxial, shear and oedometer tests are examples of tests that can be performed. In addition, special tests and model tests are developed as needed, in cooperation with the client. Test types, equipment and test procedures are selected with care, depending on the geomaterial and the problem to be analysed.

Data from laboratory experiments are used to plan and design optimal foundation solutions, to assess stability and landslide risk.  The behaviour of reservoir rock and cap rock in connection with oil and gas production is also investigated.

Research and development
The combination of cutting edge expertise and high quality equipment provides a unique starting point for innovative developments. New test types for rock and sediments are developed, and new procedures examined.  The main objective is to provide design parameters that describe the situation and load condition in question.

Ongoing research developmen are related to:

  • DSS equipment and test procedures
  • acoustic measurements
  • automation of different types of test
