Foundation engineering on land
All activities in connection with building and construction require proper planning of excavations, embankments and cuts, as well as a qualified specification of how the foundation of the planned building should be designed and carried out.
Inadequate engineering can lead to damage to neighbouring buildings, disruption in water supply and waste water systems, deformations and uneven settlements damage; or, at worst, ground failure and structure collapse.
NGI's state-of-the-art expertise
- the material properties of soils
- optimal foundation engineering solutions for structures and buildings
- ground reinforcement and reinforcement of excavations
Services related to foundation engineering on land
NGI contributes with research and development, as well as engineering, and follow-up of ground construction works. Key tasks linked to geotechnical engineering are choice of soil parameters, securing excavations and the selection of the correct foundation solutions.
NGI develops and administer sophisticated calculation programs for analysing soil structure interaction. These analyses contribute to design optimisation and thus reduce costs and qualify feasibility.
NGI also performs instrumentation and monitors deformation and forces on reinforcing and supporting structures (sheet piles, diaphragm walls, retaining walls) during the construction. Such instrumnetation and monitoring will for exaple often contribute substantially to design verfication.
Research and development
Research efforts are currently being focused on the following subjects:
- ground improvement
- design of piles and sheet piles
- software development
