NGI's laboratory

NGI is a leading international centre for research and consulting in the geosciences. In particular,
NGI's laboratory is internationally respected for high quality testing combined with high capacity
and creative problem solving in collaboration with the client. In addition to experience with soft
and sensitive Scandinavian clays, the laboratory has over the past decades developed equipment
and procedures for almost all kind of soils, for example

  • Hard overconsolidated clays (numerous sites in the North Sea)
  • Chalk (Sheringham, UK)
  • Cemented and calcareous sands (Western Australia)
  • Tertiary clays (Thorton Bank, BE, and Sillamäe Waste Deposit, EST)

Thus, the equipment is in general flexible regarding type of soil to be tested and also regarding the
nature of the loads to be applied during consolidation and during shearing to failure. At NGI the
aim is to perform laboratory tests which simulate the in situ loading conditions as closely as
possible. Relevant laboratory testing may have a crucial impact on the design concept chosen,
both with respect to economy and safety.
