Building, construction and transportation

NGI is Norway's largest centre for earth science expertise. Our building and construction services are linked to the development and building of infrastructure, in Norway and internationally.

State-of-the-art expertise in soil geotechnics and engineering geology enable us to offer a wide range of earth science services. NGI's expertise and experience from challenging projects, coupled with the development of construction methods and evaluation tools, give us a unique starting point from which to deliver ground-breaking, optimal solutions to our clients.

Who are our clients?
We offer a comprehensive range of geotechnical services to the building and construction industry and are a natural partner for building clients, the authorities, consultants and contractors. A third of NGI's business is related to the building and construction market.

Detailed list of the building, construction and transportation services offered by NGI

Our services are used for fills and cuttings, buildings, roads, railways, bridges, quays, harbours, water supply and waste water facilities, tunnels, rock caverns, dams and embankments. We cover the entire spectrum from the planning phase with early feasibility studies to detailed preliminary investigations and detail engineering.

What are we known for?
NGI is an acknowledged and much in demand consultant, both nationally and internationally. We have attracted special notice for our work on the material behaviour of soft clays and foundation engineering in these soils, and today we are the industry standard-setter. Our state-of-the-art expertise in engineering geology is concerned with fractured rock and scope of reinforcement.

Assignments and state-of-the-art expertise
We have participated in foundation engineering for large construction projects such as the new Oslo Opera and the associated new E18 road, and the University Centre in Svalbard's new facility in Longyearbyen. We were involved in the development of the diaphragm wall method, which has been used in the Oslo underground.

In recent years, NGI has had assignments linked to the E16 highway, the double-track Skøyen-Asker railway and the Lysaker station, the new National Theatre, the E18 to Kristiansand and the Vestfold and Gardermoen railways.

We have experience from over 150 subterranean facilities worldwide. Our knowledge has been used to develop the Q-method - a tool that is used internationally to classify rock masses and assess reinforcement needs. We have also been a pioneer in the use of numerical modelling to determine necessary rock reinforcement.

A driving force in the development of the earth sciences
NGI participates actively in interest associations, nationally and internationally. Several of our experts sit on professional committees, panels of experts and standards committees. We carry out comprehensive lecture activities and are happy to host professional gatherings.
