State-of-the-art geophysical and remote sensing technologies for imaging the earth and its subsurface are invaluable tools; especially when direct measurements are sparse or even impossible and lack of knowledge will result in costly expenditures and long delays.

Sophisticated subsurface investigation techniques using electromagnetic and seismic waves can produce geological 'data maps'. This can potentially reveal reservoirs of water, gas or oil as well as crucial geotechnical properties such as soil stiffness and -depth or rock quality.

Today's technologies contribute to de-risk expensive offshore drilling decisions and provide detailed, regional terrestrial geo-models.

State-of-the-art remote imaging, conducted by terrestrial, airborne, or satellite based platforms have the ability to create high-resolution and spatially accurate images of the earth's surface. These images can be used for settlement and deformation monitoring, natural hazard evaluation and monitoring, and engineering geology evaluations.

NGI's expertise in geophysics is focused on various methods and equipment for mapping offshore reservoirs to detect oil and gas and onshore geotechnical design parameters / natural hazards areas. With comprehensive scientific expertise, not only in geophysics, but also in instrumentation and equipment development, geology, geo-mechanics, laboratory testing and numerical modelling, we have a unique environment in which to realise ideas.
 

New concepts are developed by means of modelling, analysis, testing of new sensor technology, geophysical laboratory work, design, assembly of prototypes and field trial testing.
 
Research and development
NGI has been playing a major role in research and development on seismic and electromagnetic methods over the last decades. We are constantly improving our methods and solutions and have developed a more efficient data acquisition system, a next generation EM & seismic OBC system and higher precision and more refined and reliable interpretation of data, which in turn saves the industry significant expense. Since 2008, NGI has made remote sensing a strategic development goal to become an advanced user of new, highly accurate sensors and methods.

Pushing the limits of EM hardware and software as well as integrating state of the art near surface geophysics and remote sensing in geotechnical work flows are current development initiatives. Projects include cluster based EM inversion, efficient and advanced geological Lidar & InSAR processing, 3D resistivity mapping and IP contamination mapping as well as satellite avalanche mapping.

New concepts and instrumentation have led to the registration of many new patents, and several spin-off companies have been established on the basis of NGI's research and development results.
